An ergonomic workstation can be an important part in facilitating good employee production that moves a company's top end and profits upward. If a workspace is not comfortable and is constantly causing pain in the arms, legs and joints, an employee will not be able to perform efficiently to the best of their abilities. This can cause work to progress at a slower pace. Also, there are more sick days used due to improper work space safety each year, so it is important for employees to have an ergonomic work station designed for their particular tasks.
Ergonomically designed work spaces are created for the comfort and proper use of the body during various tasks. Good workstations prevent injuries to knees, joints, and wrists as well as providing proper support to the back. A desk, chair, computer, keyboard and other equipment should be designed ergonomically so that they are in reach and easy to see or use.

The desk and chair should fit an employee's body types. The chair should be comfortable, have arm rests and a back with good orthopedic support. When sitting in the chair, both feet should rest flat on the floor without putting pressure on the backs of the knees. Chair seats should not be so high that the employees feet are left hanging. In this case, use a small riser to keep the feet at a correct position if the seat cannot be adjusted lower.
The desk should be high enough and wide enough in the center so an employee can easily move to and away from the desk, or turn at the desk without bumping the knees, ankles or legs. The drawers on each side of the desk need to be able to open with an easy pull so there is no back strain when retrieving files. Front drawers should be used for small, lightweight items such as pens, pencils, clips and notes.
If a computer sits on the desk, the screen must be at eye level. It can sit flat on the desk or a riser can be used to create the correct position. It should not be closer than 8 inches from the face. This can help prevent eye strain and headaches from occurring. If a screen light needs to be softened, use a face cover to relieve the intensity.
Phones and other items should be within easy reach without stretching or turning too far from the computer screen. For best results, use a plug in head phone set to free both hands and to prevent holding the cradle with the neck, shoulder or head. Keep the head erect and shoulders straight when working.
Keep voice firm, but low and quiet. Protect your voice and throat from strain by modulating the tone. Something liquid to sip on between conversation or hard candy will help your throat from over use which can create soreness.
If ergonomic science is applied to the workspace, the sick time for employees due to headaches and injuries can be significantly reduced. A properly designed ergonomic workstation is good for both the employee and the employer.
